FrontPage Help

The purpose of this web site is to aid new and current users of FrontPage. Mainly this will deal with FrontPage98, but if you are using a previous version, help can be found here also.

As this is just starting, we will be adding to it daily, sometimes several times a day, so check back.

If you have questions on how to do something with FrontPage, go to the "Questions?" section. we will e-mail you the answer as soon as we can.

As we get questions that will help others, we will post them in the "FAQ" section.

If you have methods that you work with FrontPage that you feel will help others, please post them also in the "Questions?" section and if we use your suggestions, we will also put a link to your page.

General Tips

Which Personal Web Server should be installed?

The Microsoft Personal Web Server (MS PWS) should be used instead of the FrontPage Personal Web Server (FP PWS). This is because the FP PWS sometimes has erratic behavior, and doesn't support CGI, ISAPI, IDC or ASP.

Two versions of the MS PWS are currently available: MS PWS 2 (found on your FrontPage CD in the \PWS\ENU directory) and MS PWS 4. Version 4 is highly recommended (found on the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack CD and on the Windows 98 CD, and can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/pws/default.htm).

Before installing the MS PWS 4, please see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article found at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q179/2/67.asp.

Creating your own themes and/or developing FrontPage software

Install the SDK and Theme Designer for FrontPage 98 to create and edit your own themes. The FP 98 SDK can be found on your FrontPage CD in the \SDK directory. You can also download the SDK from http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/resources/sdkeula.htm.
